LM #1: Techniques and Strategies of Vocabulary Building

Hey, stranger!

Learning languages was always a scary thing for me: lots of rules, grammar, vocabulary, spelling and so on. But during my university studying I've figured out that learning a new language shouldn't be a torture and actually really fun process.

In order to make this process easier, I've prepared some tips for enriching your vocabulary (one of the main part of learning foreign languages and which sometimes requires a lot of time):
  • Get yourself a vocabulary notebook (VN) - It's a very important point, because you'll have your entire wordlist in one place. That means that you'll be able to look through and carry it with you whenever you want. Also, writing is extremely wonderful exercise for your memory.
  • Visualisation - This approach will help you to interact with your visual memory. Doesn't is easier to remember the word or collocation while looking at the amusing memes or photos? I think, it does. Also, you can draw a little colourful picture which associates most with this word in VN.
  • Mind maps, schemes - They can be greatly helpful, when you're trying not only learn the word and its meaning, but memorise synonyms, collocations, word origin as well. Besides, it structures your notes and word's 'families' in one beautifully made way.
And the last but not least, don't be afraid of making mistakes - its valuable part of learning.
